Summer Wellness Tips for Breastfeeding Moms
Summer is the time for sunshine, relaxation, and enjoying some extra time in nature. For breastfeeding moms, it's also important to focus on wellness to ensure both you and your baby stay healthy and happy. Here are some tips and ideas to help you maintain your wellness routine during the warm months.
Hydration is Key
Staying hydrated is an essential part of any summer routine, but it’s particularly important for breastfeeding moms. Since breastmilk is made up of 80-90% water, it is absolutely vital that you stay hydrated all of the time. Sick of basic water? Try infusing your water with fresh fruits like lemon, cucumber, or berries for a refreshing twist.
Tips: Always have your favorite water bottle handy, and consider setting reminders to drink throughout the day. Fill your insulated water bottles with ice to the top first thing in the morning so you only have to keep adding water throughout the day.
Healthy Summer Snacks
Incorporate local, seasonal fruits like watermelon, berries, and peaches into your diet. These fruits are not only hydrating but also packed with essential vitamins and minerals. Pair them with our lactation cookies or granola for a well-rounded, nutritious, and satisfying snack.
Recipe Idea: Blueberry & Oat Lactation treat Parfait - Layer high-protein Greek yogurt, fresh blueberries, and crumbled lactation cookies or granola for a delicious and healthy treat.
Sun Protection
Spending time outdoors is great, but remember to protect your skin. Use a high-SPF sunscreen, wear a hat, and seek shade during peak sun hours. Being diligent with your SPF helps you avoid unnecessary stress having to deal with painful sunburns and helps you to avoid dangerous sun-related illnesses such as sun poisoning or skin cancer. We all know that you’ll slather your baby from head to toe - DON’T FORGET ABOUT YOU!
Tip: Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before heading out and reapply every two hours.
Exercise and Fresh Air
Gentle exercises like walking, yoga, or swimming are wonderful for both mental and physical health. Fresh air and sunshine can boost your mood and provide essential Vitamin D.
Activity Idea: Take a morning or evening walk with your baby in a stroller, and bring along some of our lactation ranch pretzels for a quick snack break.
Self-Care and Relaxation
Taking time for yourself is crucial. Whether it's a quiet moment with a book, a relaxing bath, or enjoying a lactation cookie with a cup of tea, these little moments can recharge your batteries.
Tip: Schedule short "me time" breaks throughout the day. Put them on your calendar (with an alarm!) at a time when you know that someone else can be responsible for the baby for a bit!
Social Connections
Stay connected with friends and family. Social interactions can provide emotional support and a sense of community, which is important for overall well-being.
Idea: Host a summer picnic with fellow moms. Bring along a variety of snacks and drinks, and enjoy some quality time together.
Summer is a wonderful time to focus on wellness and create healthy habits that benefit both you and your baby. By staying hydrated, enjoying nutritious snacks, protecting your skin, taking time for self-care, and connecting with your community, you can make the most of the season.
