Yes, all of Bessie’s products are safe to eat while pregnant.
No, none of Bessie’s products contain fenugreek.
Yes – with caveats. While fenugreek can be an effective galactagogue (an ingredient that assists with milk production), it can often come with some unpleasant side effects. These include abdominal discomfort (for mom and baby!), sweat/urine odors and nausea. In addition, it’s also in the same family as peanuts with regards to allergies.
It depends on the product. Brewer’s Yeast, flax seed and oatmeal are the main galactagogues in our Lactation Cookies. Those same ingredients are also used in our seasonal Lactation Pumpkin Bread in addition to pumpkin itself, which is also a galactagogue. Just about everything our Lactation Granola is composed of is a galactagogue, including coconut, pumpkin seeds, raisins, almonds and apricots.
No, Blockbusters will NOT assist with increasing milk production.
BlockBusters help clear and prevent clogged ducts. This helps to prevent discomfort as well as more serious problems like mastitis. It does this by making your milk “slippery” which can also help increase your milk flow. Try combining them with our other lactation products to #MakeMoreMilk and let the milk flow!
Soy Lecithin is the main active ingredient in our BlockBusters. It’s been shown to decrease the viscosity (or thickness) of breast milk by increasing the percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids contained within.
Aside from BlockBusters and Lactation Ranch Pretzels, all the oats used in our products are fundamentally gluten-free; however, the oats are processed in a facility that once contained wheat.
Our lactation goodies also contain brewer’s yeast. Brewer’s yeast is a byproduct of the beer making process and can contain trace amounts of gluten from the barley used to make the beer. A majority of mamas are still able to consume our products if they (or baby) have a gluten sensitivity because of the minute amount potentially remaining in our finalized products.
Lactation Cookies can be made dairy-free, vegan, soy-free or nut free. See the options under the “Customized Cookies” section.
Our Lactation Granola is already vegan! If any of the fruit or nut mix-ins are a dietary concern of yours, you are in luck! We also offer a customizable Made To Order Lactation Granola where you can choose what you put in it. Custom Granola orders must be ordered in quantities of 3 pounds (3, 6, 9, etc.) so that we can make you your very own batch.
Lactation Pumpkin Bread, Lactation Cookie Sample Packs and Edges, and Lactation Pretzels are currently not able to be customized.
Nutritional Facts for our “Made to Order Granola” will vary based on your ingredients chosen.

Our Lactation Cookies typically lasts about 3 weeks, at which point they will start to dry. (#MomHack – When storing cookies use an airtight container with a piece of bread to help soften them up!)
Our Seasonal Lactation Pumpkin Bread stays fresh and ready to eat for about 2 weeks; however, we do recommend refrigerating the bread upon arrival.
For that fresh out of the oven taste our Lactation Granola has a shelf life of 12 weeks.
We are still running tests on our BlockBuster cookies, but we expect shelf life to be slightly lower due to the ingredients involved. Currently we recommend a shelf life of 2 weeks.
In our testing, the Lactation Cookies and Lactation Pumpkin Bread have been shown to freeze for at least six months and still taste wonderful. Therefore, we recommend ordering these in bulk so that you can save with our flat-shipping rates.
We are still testing BlockBusters ideal shelf life, but we do expect freezing to be shorter due to its ingredients.
Freezer bags, food storage containers or really anything that’s airtight should work well. We recommend freezing the Lactation Pumpkin Bread whole to better hold in the moisture.
We recommend starting with three Lactation Cookies or slices of Lactation Pumpkin Bread for breakfast (slice the bread into eight equal pieces). Everyone’s body responds differently, so it will take some time to see what your needs are – some moms need more, others less.
If you need more, try adding an additional cookie/slice or two as an afternoon snack.
We have not had a mama yet who relied solely on the granola for a boost as we have the cookies, so we do not have an exact measurement. We speculate that about ¼ cup of Granola is comparable to one Lactation Cookie.
There’s no one answer to this question – some moms respond better to one product vs. another, while others see equally great results from all of them. Objectively speaking, however, there are three galactagogues in our Lactation Cookies, four in our Lactation Pumpkin Bread and Lactation Ranch Pretzels, and potentially many more in our Lactation Granola, depending on how you order it.
If your ducts are already clogged, we recommend starting with six BlockBusters per day and adjusting from there as needed; for prevention, we recommend three per day. Once you’ve busted those blocked ducts and are feeling ready to cut back, make sure to do so slowly over time to reduce the risk of a relapse.
Some moms see results within a day or two; for others, it takes a week of eating 2-5 cookies/slices etc. per day. You will need to experiment and allow some time to observe your results.
